Update on Shooting at St James High School
On January 14th, 2014 at approximately 8:24pm, a shooting occurred at St. James High School in St. James Parish. The shooting took place in the parking lot of the gymnasium moments after the conclusion of a basketball game between St. James High School and Lutcher High School. As spectators were leaving the game, a subject opened fire striking one individual. Cowan Franklin (19 years old) from Lutcher, LA, was shot multiple times and was transported by Acadian Air-Med to University Hospital in New Orleans, LA where he is in stable condition. Arrested and charged was Klyin Elder (DOB 6/3/1996, 9361 Water Tower Street, Convent, LA). Kylin Elder is charged with LA R.S. 14:27.30.1 Attempted 2nd Degree Murder (1 count); LA R.S. 14:95.2 Possession of a firearm on school property (1 count); and LA R.S. 14:94 Illegal use of a dangerous weapon. Kylin Elder is currently being held at the St. James Parish Sheriff’s Office Jail awaiting bond. The shooting is the result of an argument that occurred earlier in the day involving Elder and Franklin. Detectives are continuing their investigation of this incident.
